Mixed Media Folk Art
New Mexico has one of the highest populations of talented artists per capita in the nation and many of these artists cross the boundaries of traditional and folk art, creating unique compositions all their own.
At El Nicho we are proud to feature works by these proud mixed media New Mexican artists.
Mixed Media Artist
Mikel Robinson is a internationally collected mixed media artist living in Santa Fe. He creates evocative and compelling pieces using his original photographs, antique salvaged wood, old papers, tin ceiling pieces, and other found media. Mikel cites his Southern rural upbringing, his love of outsider and folk art traditions, Christian iconography, and the beautiful imagery of the desert Southwest as the main influences on his work.
Arthur Medina, Artist
El Santuario de Chimayó Crosses
Chimayó New Mexico artist Arthur Medina has created a beautiful collection of tin crosses inlaid with turquoise. But these are not ordinary crosses. Each piece is made from the actual roof of El Santuario de Chimayó, the world famous church and site of the most important Catholic pilgrimage center in the United States. The dirt from El Santuario is believed to contain miraculous healing powers. What powers lie in these crosses is yours to discover!
